Keys History and Discovery Foundation Welcomes New Board Member
Islamorada, FL – Frank Derfler, a 20-year resident of Islamorada, has joined the Board of Directors of the Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation. The not-for-profit organization formed in 2013 to develop and operate the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center.
Derfler is a career U.S. Air Force officer who retired in 1987 in the active duty grade of Lieutenant Colonel. He spent decades in information technology and network publishing, writing hundreds of articles and columns, and serving as an expert speaking across the country. He worked for PC Magazine as a senior editor and served as vice president of Ziff Davis Media.
“With Frank’s unique skill set in the world of technology and information systems, we will be able to expand on the interactive options already available at the Discovery Center,” said Foundation President Rich Russell. “With his assistance, we plan to develop a mobile app and incorporate other tech features to enhance to experience of our visitors.”
In addition to his magazine publications, Derfler has written 22 published books on networks and information systems acquisition, as well as two novels. A long-time member of the Rotary Club of the Upper Keys, he currently serves as president of the organization. Derfler also is a Board member with the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center.
“It’s all about resources and relationships,” Derfler said. “Keys History & Discovery Center provides a rich resource of learning and enjoyment for residents and visitors. And, it helps to build relationships with everyone in the community through its wonderful group of volunteers and supporters.”

The Center is in Islamorada, MM 82, located at the Islander Resort, and is open Thursdays through Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. General admission is $12. Admission for seniors is $10 and children 13 and under are free.
