Planned/Legacy Giving

Planned gifts are a way of leaving a meaningful legacy in support of a charitable organization that matters most to you. Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation, Inc. (FKHDF) exists to support a world-class history and discovery center that accurately reflects our Florida Keys in a multifaceted and interactive environment.

The Foundation is funded through public and private donations, grants, membership and program fees, and sales of merchandise. The Foundation is a member in good standing of the American Alliance of Museums striving to meet and/or exceed the Characteristics of Excellence for U.S. Museums.

Planned gifts help ensure these vital programs and services can continue to exist, not only for this generation, but also for generations to come. Endowment gifts allow you to make a long-term impact on the Keys History & Discovery Center. These funds are invested and sustain the organization in perpetuity.

The Foundation maintains two types of endowments with accept gifts in the form of cash, checks, wire transfers and security transfers of stocks, bonds and mutual funds. We use a local Investment Advisor to manage our Investment Fund that supports the organization’s operational needs as well as a permanent endowment held and managed by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys. Both of these funds benefit the organization and are necessary to support the museum’s long-term care. If desired, you may indicate your choice as you make your pledge.

When You Give, you become a lifelong member of the Legacy Society. Legacy giving identifying the Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation as a beneficiary in your will or estate plan, does not require a large income or vast estate. Legacy giving only requires a thoughtful intention to make a difference. To become a member of the Legacy Society, we just need a formal Letter of Intent (click here to download) returned to us and you may choose or choose not to be recognized for your commitment to our museum.

As a member of the Legacy Society, you’ll receive recognition in perpetuity on our website.

If you have already included FKHDF in your planned giving arrangements, please let us know so we may invite you to join this exclusive group.

FKHDF recommends consulting with an attorney, financial planner, or other licensed professional when considering or making changes to your planned giving arrangements. This information does not constitute legal, tax, or financial advice.

Giving Options

Through your will:
will expresses your wishes as to how your property is to be distributed after your lifetime. Through a written will, you name one or more persons, usually an executor or personal representative, to manage your estate until its final distribution. This is a very popular way of giving gifts to charity — a gift you can arrange now to create a legacy.

Through a trust:
Through a trust, your assets are managed so they may extend into and well beyond your living years. You specify through the trust what assets are to be included, who is to manage and decide matters, who will benefit, and when and how long the benefits will be received. There are different types of trusts based on your desires and needs. The benefits of a charitable trust include letting you donate generously to the charities of your choice during and after your lifetime, while also receiving and providing significant tax savings for you and your beneficiaries.

Through a beneficiary designation:
beneficiary designation allows you to identify who receives ownership of certain assets after your lifetime. Beneficiary designations are common with certain types of assets, such as retirement accounts, bank accounts, life insurance policies, and stock and investment securities.
